Project history

The FREMM (FRégates Européennes Multi-Mission) program, launched in October 2004, is intended to replace the Tourville- and Georges Leygues-class destroyers. Two versions are currently planned to be built on the same hull design, propulsion system, and combat data system: nine are planned for the ASW-oriented FASM (Frégate d'Action Anti-Sous-Marin) configuration, and the final two units are to be built in the so-called FREDA (FRégates de Défense Aériennes) air defense configuration as replacements for the canceled third and fourth units of the Forbin-class air-defense destroyers. A proposed land-attack cruise-missile version known as FAVT (Frégate d'Action Vers la Terre) was not funded. Each unit of the class is intended to serve for 30 years. Under an agreement from 2002, the design and construction of ships of this class are being conducted in cooperation with Italy. The first eight ships were ordered in November 2005 under the FY 03-08 program. The first eight units are able to launch MDCN land-attack missiles (from 2 8-cell SYLVER A70 VLS tubes) and Aster-15 SAMs for self-defense (from 2 8-cell SYLVER A43 VLS cells). The proposed FREDA air defense variant will not be fitted to launch the land attack missiles, but will instead carry 4 8-cell SYLVER A50 VLS tubes for both the long-range Aster-30 missile and the short-range Aster-15.
