A three-funnelled protected cruiser with marked tumblehome, a pronounced plough bow and an overhanging stern. There was a forecastle and poop and she was originally rigged as a barque. The 165mm guns were on the upper deck with two in embrasure ports forward and the rest in sponsons, while the 139mm were on the main deck broadside.
The protective deck was complete and of 50mm total thickness, with 55mm on the slopes which ran to 1.3m below water. There was a 1m wide cofferdam above the protective deck, and 90mm bulkheads from this deck to the upper deck enclosed the main deck battery. There was a CT with 90-75mm.
1900: boilers were replaced by 12 Belleville, coal stowage reduced to 980t, mainmast was removed.
