Suchet was originally intended as a sister of the Davout, and was similar to this vessel but had a longer hull. The 100mm guns were located abaft and before the forecastle and poop 165mm.
The armour deck was curved from 0.5m above water to 1.1m below amidships with a max total thickness of 80mm increased to 100mm at the slopes. There was a cofferdam about 1.2m wide above the armour deck, and the small CT had 70mm armour. There was a cellular layer above with a height of about 0.45m at the armour deck crown, and a light debris deck over the machinery spaces.
1900s: military masts were replaced by poles.
