Project history

Similar to the Descartes class, differing as having the 165mm guns and the second upper deck pair of 100mm mounted further aft. When carried, the mines were stowed in the steering engine compartment with a rail fitted through the captain's cabin for dropping them from a stern port. The stability of Protet was reported as doubtful and ballast had to be added.

Ship protection

The 100mm guns had 50mm shields with 70mm on the CT, and the armour deck was 45mm total on the flat amidships with 60mm slopes. The armour deck was reduced to 25mm at the ends. There was a cellular layer above the armour deck and a light debris deck below over the machinery spaces.

Modernizations

None.
