Ship project history: Somewhat similar to the Tonnant but with the hull extending one deck above the armour belt. The stem curved upwards and inwards and the hull forward was described as whale-backed. The one military mast was located abaft the funnel.

Ship protection: The was 450mm at the waterline amidships, reducing to 330mm forward and 350mm aft, whilst the armour deck at the belt upper edge is given as 90mm max. The barbettes, located fore and aft, were shallow, with ammunition tubes and 15mm tunnel shields.

Modernizations: 1902-1904: machinery was replaced by 2 VTE and 8 Belleville boilers (5145hp, 14.3kts), displacement decreased to 5683t (max draught was 6.94m), there were two funnels, light pole foremast and a heavier mainmast; - 2 x 1 - 340/21; + 2 x 1 - 240/40 M1893-96, 2 x 1 - 47/40 M1885.

Naval service: The Furieux was eventually used as a submarine depot ship.
