Project history
The prototype Changcheng 320 had serious design technical problems that became evident on sea trials, including unsatisfactory underwater performance and high noise levels. Major redesign work led to Type 039G with no stepped sail. Submarines are armed by YJ-82 SSMs and Yu-3 and Yu-4 torpedoes. CY-1 ASW missile was successfully tested on this class.
