Type 051B. An enlarged version of the type 052. The gas turbines in this ship were manufactured in Ukraine, but China signed a technology transfer contract with Zoria-Mashproekt in 2001 that is intended to result in production of the DA-80 (or DN-80) engine in China for future warships. ASW capabilities have been reduced from those of the type 052, as there is no VDS or towed array and the ASW rocket launchers have been omitted. The space between the SAM launcher and the bridge superstructure was occupied by a belowdecks reload magazine. A twin hangar and a French-designed SAMAHE harpoon-type recovery and dual deck traversing system were fitted for the helicopters.
