The first ocean-going warships built by the PRC, these vessels are derived trom the Soviet Neustrashimy class (project 41), of which only one was built, despite their outward resemblance to the later project 56. They substitute triple SSM launchers for the TT of the Soviet ships. Hull design, weaponry and sensors compare very badly with other contemporary destroyers, or even with Taiwan's refitted ex-US ships. FQF-2500 ASWRL is derived from Soviet RBU-1200.
First ships, built under original design were signed as type 051 (hull nos 105-107, 131, 160-162). Next ships (nos 108, 109, 133, 134, 163 and 164) were built as type 051D (D-Dingxing, finalized design). They have improved electronics and 37mm automatic guns instead of unsuccessful 57mm semi-automatic. Also additional attack sonar (SJD-N) was installed and specialized ASW fire control system. Hull nos 110 and 132 as type 051Z (Z-Zhihui, command) had new type 381 radar and combat control system, 110 was built in this configuration and 132 was converted later.
