Project history

Designed with the assistance of NEVASABU, the Netherlands. Intended for offshore patrol duties, cargo and troop transportation, lighthouse and navigational buoy support, torpedo retrieval, and fisheries protection. May later be upgraded with the provision of a sonar, bow thruster, fin stabilizers and mine rails, but plans to add a mine-countermeasures capability have been canceled. Sisters 75 and 76 were built for potential foreign sales but were instead purchased 1996 for the Direccion General del Territorio Maritimo y de la Marine. Have 70 m³ stores or liquid fuel capacity (35t). Can carry 35m³ freshwater.

Modernizations

1999, Corneta Cabrales: - 2 x 1 - 20/70; + 2 x 1 - 12.7/90, hydrographic survey equipment

Naval service

In April 1999 Corneta Cabrales was fitted to serve as a patrol boat for the hydrographic service (Servicio Hidrografico y Oceanografico de la Armada de Chile, SHOA) and is specifically equipped for these types of activities. Aspirante Morel (later - Cirujano Videla) since 1999 also is used as hospital ship. 77 is classed as PSH (Patrullero de Servicio Hydrografico), others as PSG (Patrullero de Servicio General).
