Project history

Minas Gerais was purchased by Brazil for $9m and reconstructed for $27m. She was reconstructed at Verolme Dock, Rotterdam from June 1957 to December 1960. She received an angled deck, steam catapult, mirror-sight deck landing system, new fire control equipment and radar. During reconstruction a 2500kW AC system was installed; current was supplied by four turbo-generators and one diesel generator. Minas Gerais was commissioned 6 December 1960 at Rotterdam and arrived in Rio de Janeiro 13 January 1961. A dispute between the Navy and Air Force delayed deployment until the mid-1960s. The compromise reached was that the Air Force would fly the fixed wing aircraft and the Navy would fly the helicopters. Carrier received attack aircraft only in 1997 (AF-1 (A-4) Skyhawks).

Protection

There were mantlets around aircraft torpedoes warheads rooms only. Their thickness was 10mm. Longitudinal watertight bulkheads covered the machinery.
