U43 and U47 were both built in Germany by AG Weser in 1916, transferred to Pola by railway and commissioned as the German UB43 and UB47; after one year's service both were decommissioned on 21 June 1917 and sold in a worn-out condition to the Austro-Hungarian Navy which commissioned them as U43 and U47 on 30 July 1917.

After active service they were ceded as war reparations to France and scrapped in 1920.
