Project history

To be built by the Austriawerft Trieste. When the question arose as to whether German UB III type boats should be built under license, the Austrian UBAG company presented its Type 1916 S 1 design, and it was decided to build both types. The UB III for Adriatic use, and the Austrian design for employment further afield. Numbers over 100 were allocated as it was intended to scrap the obsolete boats U1-6 and in future to omit the first two ciphers, U101 becoming the new U1 and so on. The first three boats were laid down at the end of 1917/beginning of 1918, and were respectively 47%, 30% and 15% complete at the end of the war. The other boats were never laid down.
