The two cancelled Yarra class were re-ordered nine years later to a modified design which incorporated many features of the RN Leander class. The forecastle deck was extended right aft and a new continuous two-decked superstructure and streamlined funnel replaced the former light super structure. The air warning radar antenna was mounted on a new stump mainmast, but no provision was made for a helicopter hangar.
