Project history

A contract was signed in November 1989 between Blohm & Voss and Australian Marine Engineering Consolidated (Amecon) for a variant of the MEKO 200 design. Eight were for the RAN and two for the RNZN, but an option for two more RNZN ships was not taken up. The MEKO concept permits modules to be built over a wide area, even in New Zealand, to meet local requirements for work-sharing. Were originally to have had two G.E. LM-2500 gas turbines and a maximum speed of 31.75 kts; the starboard turbine was eliminated to save money. Either diesel can drive either or both shafts.
