Project history

Order for 16 ships of "Q" and "R" classes has been given out in December, 1939 and April, 1940 respectively, but actually works have begun only in autumn 1940 because of congestion of Yards by repair of ships damaged during Norwegian and French campaigns. They repeated design of "O" class, but dimensions and displacement are a little increased, first of all, for placing of an additional fuel stowage. It was originally planed to mount a 102mm AA gun instead of second TT bank but it was refused before completion. The arrangement of officer cabins on "R" class was changed as on "Hunt" class escorts: they were moved from stern to bow below superstructure.

The design provided possibility of removing of "Y" mount (usual practice on interwar destroyer classes) with increase in number of DCT to 8 and DC stowage to 120 pieces, however in practice to a similar measure did not resort, and increasing of ASW abilities passed without artillery easing. Soon after completion number of DCT has increased to 4, and DC stowage from 70 to 130 pieces on majority of the ships.
